Crucially, some people must carry two adrenaline autoinjectors in case of anaphylaxis.

Latest Innovations in Allergy Treatment
Neffy – A Nasal Auto-Adrenaline Device
“The Neffy device represents a significant advancement in allergy treatment,” says Dr Helen, as it offers a “more portable and user-friendly option” for administering adrenaline. Until now, the only treatment for individuals with severe allergies that may lead to anaphylaxis has been an adrenaline auto-injector (AAI), which delivers a dose into the thigh muscle through injection.
Neffy is a needle-free alternative – a single-dose nasal spray containing adrenaline (also known as epinephrine) designed to be administered into one nostril. Like traditional injectors, a second dose can be used if symptoms persist or worsen, also sprayed into the same nostril. This brings immense relief for patients who suffer with needle phobia or find it difficult to administer their AAI.
The Neffy device also boasts a longer shelf life and greater stability under certain conditions (such as high temperatures) than AAIs. Current recommendations require users to weigh more than 30 kilograms, ruling out younger users – however, we’re monitoring developments for a junior version, already approved for use in America. The drug received approval in July and is anticipated to roll out in clinics across the UK this month. It’s only available on prescription, so speak with a medical professional to determine if this allergy treatment is right for you.
Immunotherapy – For Food and Environmental Allergies

VLP Vaccine – A Preventative Vaccine for Peanut Allergy
A Phase 1 clinical trial conducted by Imperial College London has evaluated a new vaccine called VLP Peanut, developed to provide lasting protection against peanut allergy. Initial results indicate that the vaccine is safe, decreases allergic reactions, and helps build immune tolerance. These early findings encourage continued research into VLP Peanut as a possible future allergy treatment option.
The vaccine works by genetically attaching the peanut allergen to the outer surface of a virus-like particle (VLP). This enables the immune system to identify the allergen in a controlled way, potentially “retraining” the immune system so individuals can consume peanuts without experiencing a serious allergic response.
As a team, we’re monitoring this research carefully. Whilst in its infancy (and realistically a long way from being available to the general public), this represents an exciting development in innovations in allergy treatment and prevention.
