Respiratory Testing
Asthma Testing and Support
Respiratory testing and diagnosis are the first steps towards treating and managing this challenging condition. Due to the complicated nature of asthma, and the fact that it overlaps with many other conditions, patients and their families often come to see us at Dr Helen Allergy as they are feeling frustrated at the lack of clarity surrounding their breathing related symptoms. This can regularly have a severe impact on the patient’s mental and physical wellbeing.
Charlotte, our respiratory nurse specialist, is highly experienced in diagnostics, medications and the management of allergic rhinitis, asthma, COPD, bronchiectasis and fibrosis. In conjunction with Dr Helen, she offers an impactful consultation which includes testing.

An Asthma assessment at our clinic includes:
- A detailed discussion of the patient’s symptoms and medical history.
- A thorough examination of the patient.
- Carrying out diagnostic testing, namely spirometry and exhaled nitric oxide testing. For most patients we recommend both are undertaken to give a full assessment. To read about these tests in more detail click here
- An assessment of any contributing external factors that may be exacerbating the condition. This is an important step as many asthmatics have some sort of environmental trigger and 30-40% of those with environmental allergies, have asthma.
- We are able to offer peak flow assessments and allergy skin prick testing as required.

Based on the outcome of the assessment, a diagnosis may be reached and from there, a treatment plan can be made so that the patient is able manage their condition effectively and with confidence. We are also able to prescribe appropriate medication and review as required.
No special preparation is required for an Asthma assessment, but we do advise that individuals do not smoke on the day of the test and ideally do not take their blue inhaler or other bronchodilators (medications which open the airways). We also cannot carry out the spirometry tests if there has been a recent infection (please call for advice if you are not sure).
Lung function tests are generally not performed on children under 5 as they may not have the coordination required to undertake these tests. However, whilst many families may have been told asthma is not diagnosed in under 5’s, this is now outdated advice and a diagnosis can be reached if there are strong suspicions. Each child is different, and some younger children are able to carry out components of the lung testing. If you wish to discuss a paediatric asthma assessment, please do get in touch for further information.
