Steve Frampton

ENT Consultant

Hi, I’m Steve Frampton, an ENT Consultant (Ear, Nose and Throat) working in collaboration with the team at Dr Helen Allergy. I have a broad experience in adult and paediatric (children’s) ENT conditions, both allergic and non-allergic, and have a subspecialist interest in Paediatric ENT. Following my medical training in Cambridge and London, I undertook my Specialist training on the South Coast of the UK before undertaking a PhD at the University of Southampton and an international fellowship in Paediatric ENT at Starship Children’s Hospital in Auckland, New Zealand. I am Paediatric Lead for ENT at University Hospitals Dorset and work closely alongside the Paediatric and Neonatal teams locally, putting children at the heart of the service we deliver. I look forward to meeting you at the Ringwood
clinic.

ENT (Ear, Nose & Throat) FAQs

Have questions about our private ENT specialist services, appointments, or treatments? Here are some common questions and answers to help you get the information you need.

ENT stands for Ear, Nose, and Throat, which are interconnected parts of the body. ENT specialists focus on diagnosing and treating conditions that affect these areas, including hearing problems, sinus issues, sore throats, nasal congestion, and balance disorders. Since these areas are crucial for communication, breathing, and balance, early intervention can improve quality of life and prevent long-term complications.

ENT specialists treat a wide range of conditions affecting the ear, nose, and throat. This includes ear infections, hearing loss, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), sinusitis, nasal congestion, sore throats, allergies, sleep apnoea, voice disorders, and conditions related to the tonsils and adenoids. They also address balance issues, such as vertigo, and perform procedures related to the upper respiratory tract.

You should see an ENT specialist if you experience persistent or severe symptoms related to your ears, nose, or throat, such as chronic ear infections, hearing loss, frequent sore throats, sinus congestion, or balance problems. If over-the-counter treatments are ineffective or symptoms worsen over time, it’s important to seek professional evaluation.

ENT specialists may perform various diagnostic tests, depending on your symptoms. These may include hearing tests (audiometry) -please note this will need an onward referral, endoscopy to examine the nasal passages or throat, allergy tests, imaging studies like X-rays or CT scans, and balance assessments. These tests help determine the underlying cause of your symptoms and guide treatment decisions.

Treatment for ear infections depends on the type and severity. For middle ear infections (otitis media), antibiotics may be prescribed if a bacterial infection is suspected. In some cases, over-the-counter pain relievers or warm compresses may be recommended. For chronic ear infections or complications, a minor surgical procedure may be required to drain fluid or insert a ventilation tube to prevent further infections (this will need an onward referral).

Yes, ENT specialists can help with snoring and sleep apnoea. They assess the airway for blockages or abnormalities that may contribute to snoring or interrupted breathing during sleep. Treatment options may include lifestyle changes, nasal decongestants, or surgical procedures like the removal of tonsils or adenoids in severe cases of obstructive sleep apnoea.

Sinus problems, including sinusitis, can be treated with a variety of methods, depending on the cause. For acute sinusitis, treatments may include antibiotics (if bacterial), decongestants, or nasal saline irrigation. Chronic sinus issues may require more advanced treatments, such as corticosteroids or sinus surgery to correct anatomical issues or remove blockages.

Yes, ENT specialists can diagnose and treat hearing loss and tinnitus. For hearing loss, treatment options may include hearing aids, medications, or surgical interventions, depending on the underlying cause. Tinnitus, or ringing in the ears, is often managed with sound therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy, or medications to help alleviate the symptoms. Early intervention can help prevent further hearing impairment and improve quality of life.
